Reseach in acoustics and noise control (in the Galway Sound Lab) at the University of Galway is dedicated to understanding and improving how sound affects people and the environment. Our work covers everything from the noise of wind turbines (both onshore and offshore) to the impact of road traffic noise in communities. We also focus on how indoor spaces, like classrooms and offices, sound and feel to the people working in them. Our research goes beyond just measuring noise; we look at how to create better soundscapes, so that people can enjoy a quieter, more pleasant environment. We see acoustics as an important part of sustainability, because if noise issues aren’t addressed, it can make it harder to reach sustainability goals and protect people’s health and wellbeing. By doing this, we’re helping to make sure that progress in areas like renewable energy and transport doesn’t come at the cost of peace and quiet.
