Biography

I’m a Professor of Informatics specialised in data analytics and semantic technologies at the Data Science Institute and the Insight Centre for Data Analytics of the National University of Ireland Galway. I was previously Senior Research Fellow at the Knowledge Media Institute of the Open University, where I led the Data Science Group. I’m leading research and development activities around the meaningful sharing and exploitation of distributed information. I have worked on applying the technologies coming out of my research, especially Semantic Web/Linked Data technologies, in various domains including medicine, education especially through learning analytics, Smart Cities & the Internet of Things, personal data management, etc.

Research Interests

My research relates broadly to the field of Artificial Intelligence. After a PhD focusing on knowledge representation (especially description logics, as well as fuzzy logics) and automated reasoning (mostly classification-based reasoning and case-based reasoning), much of my research activities focused on ontology engineering and the semantic web. Within the semantic web area, I worked on various aspects of linked data and large scale knowledge and data infrastructures, leading to applications in education, medicine, IoT and smart cities. As part of those developments, I came to use and study various aspects of machine learning and data mining, as well as to explore possible issues with and solution to personal privacy management. More recently, I have been increasingly working on supporting methodologies for data ethics: The ethical collection, processing and consumption of data.
