Infectious Disease
Infectious Disease Research
The Infectious Disease Section in the School of Biological and Chemical Sciences at University of Galway encompasses interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research in both fundamental and applied aspects of infectious disease research including microbial diagnostics, pathogenesis, immune response, synthetic chemistry, antimicrobial resistance, glycobiology, host-pathogen interactions, analytics, pathogen physiology, molecular biology, MedTech, and medical device regulatory affairs. Our aim is to positively impact global health by pioneering innovative research, promoting comprehensive education, and fostering interdisciplinary collaboration. Through fundamental and translational research, we will work towards a healthier future by developing better controls for challenging infectious diseases.
The Infectious Disease Section is committed to supporting collaboration across disciplines within our own research community and internationally. Each year we sponsor undergraduate summer research studentships co-supervised by two research groups focussing on an inter- or multi-disciplinary topic. These provide an excellent opportunity for postdoctoral researchers/early career researchers (ECRs) to design and supervise a research project to generate pilot data. We also host an annual Section research day with invited talks from leading guest researchers, as well as oral and poster presentations by Section staff, ECRs, and research students.
Our active research informs undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in the Microbiology, Chemistry, and MedTech pathways in the School of Biological and Chemical Sciences to provide our students with the current state of the art and latest cutting edge findings in the relevant fields.
