Welcome to Earth and Ocean Sciences (EOS)

In Earth and Ocean Sciences (EOS) we offer a unique degree: a dynamic exploration of our planet, blending geology and oceanography to uncover the processes that shape the Earth's surface and the vast, largely unexplored oceans. This interdisciplinary field, informed by 4.6 billion years of Earth history, is crucial for addressing some of the most pressing global challenges, including climate change, sea-level rise, natural hazards, and sustainable resource management. By understanding the Earth's systems and their interactions, students gain the knowledge and tools needed to contribute to environmental protection, predict and mitigate natural disasters, and support responsible stewardship of our planet’s resources—making this degree both intellectually rewarding and globally impactful.

Earth and Ocean Sciences, and the topics and courses you will cover in this degree, directly address many of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. EOS is perfectly placed to train you as a scientist with the necessary technical, field and “green skills” required to better understand both the complex processes of planet Earth and our interactions with them.

We hope you will find Earth and Ocean Sciences at Galway an interesting, challenging, engaging programme and we are excited to accompany you on this journey.
