Recognition of Irish-based women in STEM was the impactful theme at the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Applied Mathematics’ recent event in May, celebrating the life and work of renowned Irish mathematical physicist Sheila Christina Tinney (née Power, 15 January 1918 – 27 March 2010). The strength of impact was reflected by the diverse community gathered of university, family and local secondary school members, and by the rich and insightful talks delivered by guest speakers Orla Feely (Vice President for Research, Innovation and Impact, UCD); Hugh Tinney; Dominican College Taylors’ Hill second and third year Junior Mathematics Enrichment participants Yvonne, Yuliya, Ranya, Lisa, Gerda, Emma and Anoushka; Michael Tuite (School of Maths, NUI Galway); and Anne Scott (Equality and Diversity Office, NUI Galway).
