Prof Ted Vaughan
Prof. Ted Vaughan is Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Director of the Institute for Health Discovery and Innovation at the University of Galway. He received a BE (2007) and PhD (2011) in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Limerick, before joining the University of Galway as a Postdoctoral Researcher and later spending time as a Visiting Postdoctoral Scholar at the University of Notre Dame. He was appointed Lecturer in Biomedical Engineering in 2015 and has since developed an internationally recognised research programme in biomedical engineering and biomechanics.
His research focuses on both fundamental and applied challenges in orthopaedic and cardiovascular biomechanics, with particular emphasis on the mechanics of biomaterials, bone fragility, and next-generation medical implants. He was awarded a prestigious European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grant to investigate the multiscale mechanisms underlying bone fragility in type-2 diabetes. In parallel, his work has a strong translational focus in cardiovascular medical devices, including the design, modelling, and evaluation of vascular implants and bioabsorbable stent technologies. Prof. Vaughan has extensive experience leading large international research collaborations. He has coordinated major European training and research programmes, including the MSCA Innovative Training Network BioImplant, which developed new bioresorbable materials for orthopaedic and vascular implants, and he currently coordinates the BIOMEND Doctoral Network, focused on bioabsorbable metals for next-generation coronary and endovascular stents. Alongside his research leadership, Prof. Vaughan has collaborated extensively with the medical technology industry, working with international partners to translate fundamental engineering advances into new medical device technologies. His work combines computational modelling, experimental biomechanics, and biomaterials science to address key challenges in musculoskeletal and cardiovascular health.
